Cabling for IP security cameras: installation guide
Learn how to install cabling for an IP surveillance system: from cable selection to NVR connection.
IP security cameras have replaced analog systems thanks to superior image quality (2K/4K), easy management, and the ability to use a single cable for data and power through PoE.
System Components
- •IP cameras (indoor/outdoor, dome/bullet)
- •Cat6 network cable (recommended for CCTV)
- •PoE switch with enough ports and wattage
- •NVR (recorder) or server with management software
- •Hard drive for storage (1-4 TB depending on cameras)
What cable to use for IP cameras
We recommend Cat6 for CCTV installations due to its high-speed data transmission capability over distances up to 100 meters. For outdoor use, choose cable with PE (polyethylene) jacket for weather resistance.
- •Indoor: Standard Cat6 UTP
- •Outdoor: Cat6 with PE jacket for weather protection
- •Underground: Cat6 with double jacket or in conduit
- •Maximum distance: 100 meters per run (with PoE)
How many cameras can PoE power
- •8-port PoE switch (120W): 8 standard cameras
- •16-port PoE switch (240W): 16 cameras or 8 PTZ
- •24-port PoE switch (370W): for large installations
Installation tips
- •Plan before wiring: mark camera positions on floor plan
- •Use conduit outdoors to protect cable
- •Leave extra cable at each point (30-50 cm) for adjustments
- •Label each cable at both ends
- •Test each run before mounting cameras
