How to design a modern office network

Design the perfect network for your office: topology, equipment, how many points you need and where to place them.

Why is good network design important?

A poorly planned network causes bottlenecks, dead zones and high maintenance costs. Good design ensures performance, scalability and security.

Step 1: Assess needs

  • Current and projected number of employees
  • Devices per workstation (PC, IP phone, printer)
  • Special requirements (video conferencing, VoIP, NAS)
  • Available budget

Step 2: Star topology

Star topology is the standard: all devices connect to a central switch in the rack. This simplifies diagnostics and management.

Step 3: Calculate network points

Golden rule: 2 points per workstation + 1 point per common area (printer, TV, AP). For a 20-person office: ~50 points.

Step 4: Choose equipment

  • PoE managed switch (powers APs and phones)
  • Wall or floor rack depending on space
  • Wi-Fi 6 Access Points (1 per 150m²)
  • UPS to protect network equipment

Step 5: Plan for scalability

Always install 30% more points than you need today. It is 5x cheaper to do it during installation than afterwards.
