Fiber optic vs Ethernet: what does your business need?

Fiber optic or Ethernet: which is better for your business? We compare speed, cost and real use cases.

What is the difference between fiber and Ethernet?

Fiber optic transmits data with light, while Ethernet cable (copper) uses electrical signals. Both have advantages depending on the scenario.

Ethernet (copper) — advantages

  • More affordable (cable + connectors)
  • PoE compatible (powers cameras, APs)
  • Easier to install and repair
  • Ideal for distances up to 100m

Fiber optic — advantages

  • Speeds of 10–100 Gbps
  • No electromagnetic interference
  • Distances up to 10 km
  • Ideal for backbone between buildings

When to use each?

  • Standard office: Ethernet Cat6/Cat6A
  • Industrial warehouse: Ethernet Cat7 (shielded)
  • Between buildings: Fiber optic
  • Data center: Fiber + Ethernet combined

💡 95% of Barcelona offices only need Ethernet Cat6A. Fiber is for runs over 100m.
