Fusion vs mechanical connectors: which method to choose for fiber optics?
Arc fusion or mechanical connector? We analyze the pros and cons of each fiber optic termination method to help you choose the right one.
Arc fusion (splicing)
Arc fusion is the professional standard. It aligns two fibers and fuses them with a precision electric arc. The result is a permanent joint with extremely low loss (< 0.02 dB typical).
Mechanical connectors
Mechanical connectors align and hold fibers without fusing them. They use index-matching gel to reduce reflection. Useful for temporary repairs or where a fusion splicer is not available.
When to use each method?
For permanent installations (FTTH, backbone, racks) always use arc fusion. Mechanical connectors are acceptable for emergency field repairs or temporary installations.
